Twenty years ago Arab Americans were still a republican "block." Jews were - and for the most part still are - a democrat 'block." Jim Baker and the Bush family were tightly connected with the Saudi royal family, the ruling family in Kuwait, and other Gulf nations by business ties. Baker had nothing to lose and everything to gain, both politically and economically, by pressuring Israel into what became Oslo. That was then, and the republican party has become utterly dependent upon the religious right, the equivalent of Israel's ultra orthodox, for it's base support. The republican party cannot pressure Israel as it did in the late 1980s anymore than the democrats could ever pressure it. If you are depending upon American pressure to make Israel do the sane thing, think again. Sane people are not in control of either nation.
