How would US, or Israeli - for that matter, "support" for Syria, at all differ from supporting Assad Jr.? Do you differentiate between "Syria" and Assad? Between "Egypt" and Mubarak? If "L'etat c'est moi" was wrong for Louis XIV, its wrong for Assad too. The best thing the US and Israel to do is to firmly support the Syrian people AGAINST the Assad dictatorship. How can Israel support the Syrian people while opposing its authoritarian, absolutist monarchy? Remember how the US supported the murderous Shah of Iran? Whatever the short-term benefits, it didn't work out too well in the long run. How is supporting other dictators any different? How do we avoid the risk that when the revolution comes we will be on the wrong side? Israel and the US desperately need to publicize an anti-monarchical policy of supporting the human rights of its neighboring populations, including the Palestinians. And it should be talking to its neighbors, and telling them so at every opportunity.
