Jewish history and traditions, the Galut, Zionism and the State of Israel - so many dreams and hopes, so much idealism. X want Israel to be like this, Y prefers us to be like that. And when another person, and then a state, doesn´t behave according to your ideals, then there is a crisis. But underlying it all is of course the fact that there is a reality in Israel, where millions of jews (and others, of course) have to deal with - yes, that´s right, the reality. An american jew will sooner or later move into a higher sphere of intellectual exercises and words, away from the israeli soil. Israeli becomes a fantasy, a symbol, an issue to study and have opinions about, but not a real place to live in. I prefer the israeli debate. About the real thing, the real Israel - and not the american jewish fantasy.
