The author is naive. He seems to hold on to the idea that a non-commercialised connection is possible between Israelis and Diaspora Jews. This ignores the many ways in which Israel has become all about money. Settlements are big business, Jerusalem is a theme park, and the spirit of community has been buried by neoliberal politicians in league with Israel's economic elite.
