It is past the point of no return. People are naive to believe that religious fanaticism can be "debated" into non-violence. Daniel Pipes, in is book Radical Islam Comes to America, lays out the fundamentals of fascist and totalitarian thought and shows how it exists in Islamic radicalism today. Fascism was once fought and beaten. It cost the world over 60 million dead, not to mention the material costs. Europe learned the hard way what cannot be tolerated any longer - total war. The Arab and Islamic countries have never had to deal with such in recent times, despite all their petty wars. It may be time to make an example (Iraq was a surgical, limited and not a good example). Iran, having made open threats of war and defying the world on WMDs, should be that example. The world can act without using nukes to prevent nukes from being used. Once the nukes start being used, the idea of limited nuclear war becomes the new standard. Israel, or the West, have been warned.
