I cannot agree with you more. Meron Benvenisti was always my ideal statesman, always focused on the danger of the occupation to the Israeli soul, and the need to understand the Palestinians. But more often than not his voice was silenced by petty politicians who tried to please their constituent even by selling their soul. Unfortunately, the damagae Meron predicted was done. Just read some of the posters, their cynicism, total misunderstanding of the Palestinian aspirations (calling them Pals derrogatively) and a haughtiness that stems either from a complex of superiority or from a total lack of humanity. I hope not all is lost. Israel performs beautifully in the areas of sciences and arts and it has some marvellous people of conscience like Meron Benvenisti, my mentor Yitzchak Navon, and the late Yeshayah Leibovitz, a truly religious man who was not shy telling the truth. It's the American Jews more than the native Israelis who seem to be most vocal in support of Jewish settlements
