To much money has been invested in the F35 project and if it were scraped not only would it cost thousands of jobs directly and indirectly but also the US has been planning on making the F35 their next generation fighter for over a decade now if they just scrap the project what is the US military going to be using in future because you can't just design a next generation aircraft overnight? Aircraft like the F18 will still be main fighter for the navy & marines long after its outdated. China and Russia even India are all currently in process of developing stealth fighters. No F35 would leave America with less than 100 F22 and the rest of the fleet would all be outdated, the F35 was designed to replace these older aircraft. It would also affect countries who were planning to buy the F35 who are either still planning to buy it but in reduced numbers or full strengh so it would affect the balance of air power globally. The STOVAL version of the F35 should have been scrapped because the navy and marines already planning to buy a carrier capable version so they don't need a vertical take off and land version as well. Very few countries have ordered the more expensive STOVAL version anyway and its combat capability is inferior to the standard F35. The F35 is not going to be bought in the same numbers as it was originally hoped unless the price is drastically reduced but the project itself is still safe.
