Meir, thanks for the reply. Also, I misspoke - I should've quoted Sura 47 (Sura 49 is more of a mission statement). It is difficult to find common ground when one side believes that their deity promised them land, while the other side believes that the unerring word of God states "The Day of Resurrection will not arrive until the Moslems make war against the Jews and kill them" (Sahih Bukhari hadith 004.52.176). (And Arieh, I am more open to reading scholars' hypothesis that Canaanites and Jews are ethnically identical, than to believe that 2 pairs of every animal fit on a boat.) Israel should find a reasonable negotiating partner among secular Palestinian Arabs, but that voice tends to gets suppressed under threat. Part of the reason why most Arabs loathe the Druze is because they embrace neo-Platonic reason: free will is an affront to the Qur'anic doctrine of predestination, and the Mu'tazilites lost this debate in Islam long ago. But both sides must adopt reason to coexist.
