David, while I was living in Nablus my friend was studying the history of Nablus back to Roman times. Nablus was at one time known as Neapolis. Eventually we found the location of the original Schechem and it was a long hike from what is now Nablus. The remains are surrounded by a high chain-link fence with a sign documenting what it is, when it was discovered and by whom.
