To Dave first: Yes, I am an Israeli. Then to maria: Too bad you didn't take the trouble to explain what is making you think I am not a Jew, but chose instead to expose what everyone knows about Zionism and the State of Israel. Prof. Zeev Sternhell is Professor of Political Science at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He is the author, among works in several languages, of Founding Myths of Israel: Nationalism, Socialism, and the Making of the Jewish State (1997), He is also one of the founders of Peace-Now. Retired General Shlomo Gazit is a member of Israel Policy Forum's Israel Advisory Council, and of the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies at Tel Aviv University. He served as head of Israel's Military Intelligence and as coordinator of Israeli Government Operations in the occupied territories, and then, went to serve two terms as President of the Ben Gurion University in Beer-Sheva. The title of one of his books, published in 1983, tells it all: "Trapped fools - Thirty years of Israeli Policy in the Territories". He has often expressed his support for the Peace-Now positions. Amnon Shahak, who succeeded Ehud Barak as Chief of Staff, is known as a supporter of the Oslo process. Amy Ayalon, former Commander of the Israeli Navy and later head of the Shin Bet internal security service, came out openly, after he retired, with critical views of Israel's policies and is currently a leading voice in the call for immediate withdrawal from the occupied territories. I assume that, for you, this is more than enough not to think about these public figures as Israeli Jews. This is why, you see, I have no problem at all with your opinion on my own Jewishness. I largely prefer not to be thought as a Jew with them, than to be one with you and Dave.
