    I agree with your assessment of Hamas. They are not Fatah or the IRA. They are not even really a Palestinian organisation - they were never part of the PLO. The problem is where to from here. Hamas have outplayed everyone. They are not going to start a war - they're too smart for that. They will work hard to improve basic services and root out corruption, thus boosting their popularity. Any funding shortfall will be made up by Islamic sources in the Gulf. If Israel goes unilateral as you suggest then Hamas will use that as an excuse to declare the death of the two state solution, and blame Israel for it. Maybe there's a chance to work closely with Egypt and Jordan, playing on their own fear of internal Islamic extremism. There is no love lost between the Arab league and Iran. Conventional Sunni Arab nationalists feel like they have lost Iraq, and they don't want to lose Palestine as well.
