It is astonishing that you seriosely claim Isrtael is or could be "a modern civil society where all citizens are equal irrespective of their colors and the genes of their mothers." This indicates that you still did not comprehend Zionism. "reaching out to the arabs" was never based on political conviction of the Labour that the Arabs are equal or emancipatoric counterparts. It always has been rather a very arrogant and opportunistic method of the zionist Labour Party all the way back to Ben Gurion. Mr. Amayreh apparently forgot that even the UN, back in the Seventies concluded Zionism is equal with Racism. Talking about "Equality" while Ben-Gurion already in the Fifties has planed -but failed- to expell all Arabs of Big Nazareth beyond the border, or while the often as a Peace Hero selebrated Rabin ordered to braek legs and hands and while the "Generouse" Barak kills 13 Palestinian arabs, "citizens" of Israel is more than rebelling. As long as Zionism exists there will be no hope for a living in Equality ang Dignity since one of the basic pillar of Zionism is the claim, Palestine the home of the Jews. The arguments of Levy are more than right and evident. But he unfortunetally does not offer any perspectives. He mentions the arab parties but he does not examine them in a criticall way. I do not doubt that they are doing a good job, but I think we must develop a new and diffirent attitude in promoting and patronizing the national consciousness of the arabs in Israel. On the way to reach that level it needs more than the "classical way" of debating the Knesset and talking to the press. This Leadership must work closer with the common people. We need to extract their awarness to their historical and daily realities. We need to work harder in the streets, schools, universities and at the workplaces. We need to promote Art and education, to learn our history from our own perspective and not from a zionist one. Anyway, it is very sad that this article is written by a jew and not a Palestinian. Another authentic Indication of the deformed reality.
