I guess democracy has shown its ugly head again!! ;-) The world (Israel especially) needs to try and understand why people voted for Hamas, was it as they believed their life was not getting better under Fatah? and if so why? was Fatah incapable of governing? Did Israels harsh right-wing, unilateral stance against Fatah and Abu Mazen (Abbas) weakened Fatah and made the Palestinians retaliate by voting for Hamas. I do wonder if the election result would be different if Israel allowed Fatah to be actively involved in the evacuation from Gaza. To be honest i think both sides are to blame. We just have to wait and see if Hamas extends the olive tree branch to Israel and if Israel will be willing to accept a democratically elected (hopefully more moderate) Hamas government as a peace partner. extremism breeds extremism, a vicious cycle that contiues today.
