These failures point out the extent to which the army has become over politicized, with top officers seemingly concerned about their after-army careers. It does not help to have Peretz, a former union organizer with no high level millitary experience, put in charge of the Ministry of Defense as the political price for a government. Surely there are more qualified members of Labor for this spot and Israel should not have to pay the price for Peretz' desire to add to his resume for the next election. National unity is important now, but later changes have to be made.
