But they must be assessed rationally with recognition given to both level of danger, and probability. Israel's invasion of Lebanon created Hisbollah, and every action Israel has taken towards Hisbollah since has increased rather than reduced the power of Hisbollah. Is there a REAL threat of Hisbollah taking control of Lebanon? Vanishingly small. Is there a REAL probability of the men who caused Hisbollah, and have made it ever greater over the last 30 years repeating their idiocy? Alas, it is great. Hamas seemed a good idea. Foster the rise of an anti-PLO faction amongst the Palestinians to undermine Arafat. Begin liked the idea. Alas, Hamas turned out to be less tame than Arafat's PLO. When Arafat died, did Israel reach out to the moderates that rose to replace him? No, it shunned the moderate Abbas and clamped down before the PA elections, giving great aid to Hamas in achieving victory. Now the 'wise men' of Israel are trying to topple the PA and Fatah, which will hand the West Bank to Hamas. What hope is there as long as Israel is it's own worst enemy?
