Israel, above all, is about vicariously participating in an act that one would be ashamed to be caught committing oneself -- but that one really admires. It is so for Israel in general for her overseas supporters, and it is so for the majority of Jews within Israel with respect to the settlers. Their acts are the essence of what Israel is about, and if you reject their acts, you reject the entire basis for the state. Conversely, if you support Israel at all, deep down inside, you like what the settlers are doing. You just prefer not to admit it.
