10 or 20 yeatrs from today we may look back at today much as people look back to attempts to appease Hitler in the 1930s. If we allow North Korea to become a full fledged nuclear power, and we show the world that we will go to great lengths to appease Kim, then every little dictator and repressive regime will see the benefit to having a nuclear arsenal. The cold war was an extremely dangerous time, where the world came close to nuclear war, but the nuclear powers of that era had lots to lose so they held back. If we get to the point where dozens of third world powers have nuclear weapons then a nuclear exchange becomes almost inevitable.
