an elaborate scheme by the united states to appear strong with Israel (to the powerful jewish lobbies) while knowing full well that it won't veto the resolution, or, plainly defending Israel and lose credibility to the ENTIRE world, proving that it is only paying lip service to Palestinians and the two state solution. It is quite simple really, if you support the settlements, you veto, if you don't you approve or abstain from the vote. The motion is not on an Israeli pullout from the occupied palestinian lands, but rather a justified condemnation of the settlement enterprise in the west bank, actions that the united states have denounced themselves. Backing away from this position will be very costly politically for the united states and the so-called moderate arab camp that supports them...
