(1) Ultra-orthodox use political manipulation to maximize "benefits". (2) These benefits are not really beneficial. They are a life of poverty & seclusion. They lock yeshiva students in early and securely. Supposedly scholarly people cannot make a living anymore, like their grandfathers could. (3) It gets too expensive to maintain. (4) Seculars start getting angry and demagogic (5) Yeshiva students demand their leaders maintain the benefits because they have no other way of living (6) both sides go to war with eachother. We desperately need younger, smarter Rabbis.
