This is nothing new. This has been Hamas's position since 1988(see Hroub's, Hamas: political thought&action). Hamas has a historical and interim solution in relation to Palestine/Israel. The historical solution is all of Palestinian must be freed thru jihad. The interim solution does not recognise Israel's "right to exist" but it recognises that Israeli exists as "a reality". This allows for a hudna (ceasefire), which is different from a peace treaty as it doesn't recognise Israel's right to occupy Palestine in 48 or 67. To do so would be to give up the Palestinians claim to their historic homeland, to accept that Israel's right to steal Palestinian land and to dispossess millions of Palestinians and refuse the return of refugees and for Israel to claim Jerusalem solely for themselves. As John Whitbeck notes there is a difference between recognising Israel exists and recognising their "right" to exist www.counterpunch.org/whitbeck12212006.html
