Regarding your suggestion of sharing Jerusalem, that would require Israel to give up control over ALL of Jerusalem, while the Palestinians have no de-facto control to lose. Sure, it mught work, if an outside power like the UN had control over all civil matters, including housing, infrastructure, zoning, building permits, and security. This was the initial position of UN res 181 for the partition of Palestine. Here, Jerusalem was given status Corpus separatum, meaning neither Jewish nor Palestinian control. Instead, Jerusalem would be a special international zone administered by the UN. Initially, the Arab states were against it. Now, Israel is against it. Go figure.
