Something is cooking, but what? Israel has crossed all lines by passing undemocratic legislation and treating the Quartet’s last move with the usual disdain. Simultaneously Hamas’s transfer of its political base from Damascus to Doha and Cairo removes the last obstacle to rapprochement with the West, and opens the way to Palestinian union under the benevolent gaze of Obama, Merkel, Sarkozy, et. al. You would expect Abu Mazin and his Fatah faction to be desperately attempting a new victory at the UN so as to acquire the kudos which would ensure their dominance of the new national unity government, but they have been as silent as the sphinx. The only explanation for Abu Mazin’s inaction, short of total lack of astuteness, is that he has a deal with the US, and the EU which meets the Palestinian and Arab threshold. If such a deal exists, the fine details will still have to be negotiated with Israel. Netanyahu does not want to negotiate. Bye bye Bibi, Hello Dagan.
