Arabs were within the UN partition lines while the Irgun and Lehi attacked them. The Civil War which broke out with an attack upon a Jewish bus on 30 November 1947 involved actions by irregular forces of both sides. The 'borders' drawn by the UN were absurd, indefensible. unworkable, and BOTH sides knew it. The sanitized - fictionalized - myths taught by both sides are so void of truth as be nothing but propaganda if not outright lies. From the moment the UN voted a war was inevitable. The Jewish Palestinians had better organization and moved to consolidate lines of communications which was ABSOLUTELY necessary as much of the Arab strength lay astride those lines of communications which were absolutely essential to supply and reinforce the scattered concentrations of Jewish settlements. Thus was born the myths of both sides. That the Arabs were the only party to starting the war, or the 'nakba' were Jews rapaciously drove Arabs from the region. No one is seriously talking about '1947 borders'. The question for the last 5 years, indeed 16, has been what adjustments to the 1967 borders would be made. We have a real problem when fanatics on both sides start babbling about their myths of 1947 instead of 2010.
