They will have no trouble at all getting a non binding resolution supporting statehood in the General Assembly ( probably about 3 quarters of the UN will support them ). Whilst they will win in the General Assembly to formerly be granted statehood and UN membership they must go to the Security Council where the US has a veto and has said they will veto any plans for statehood which will mean all they have is a General Assembly resolution Israel is free to say it does not recognize and ignore so on the ground very little will change. If Abbas hadn't been such a fool he would have made use of his ally Obama when he was in a position to help him which he no longer is. If he had agreed to the UNCONDITIONAL talks which Bibi was offering and was all he was able to offer then with Obama's help he could have got negotiated concessions from Bibi. He probably could have negotiated a long term settlement freeze and an end to the Gaza blockade if not more but instead he wanted to play the region's new hard man and refused to negotiate when Obama was at his political prime and now after 3 years of refusing to talk Obama now has to support Israel in the UN for the sake of his election campaign.
