Artist colonies are just a posh way of saying gated. Artists worth their salt would shun them like the plague because blocking new experiences and ideas is just the opposite of what art is supposed to be about. Don't be fooled. Ditto for other communities that shun people not like themselves. There's no harm in that if that's what they choose, but they shouldn't be planted in the middle of a city like a bone in a throat. // And here's a thought: immersive Jewish halakhic lifestyle has survived down the ages precisely because it successfully learned how to protect itself in extremely disadvantageous surroundings.
