The American congress is the most pro-Israel body in the world, probably surpassing the Knesset in this regard. In spite of this, when Congress was faced with a bill recognizing the "Armenian genocide", they failed to pass it. Israel's right wing government especially wanted this bill passed as a stick in the eye of the Turks and a demonstration to the Turks of the "influence" Israel had over the American government. I cannot remember another time or another issue in which the congress did not come through for Israel. The reason was obvious. Turkey is a valuable American ally, hosting a critically important America air force base. This is not something to throw away because of childish games from Israel. Even American congressmen could see this and they deserve some credit. Some of these congressmen now think they "owe" Israel for their disloyalty. Would they take America to war with Iran to make Israel happy? They might. It's only money and servicemen's lives they are throwing away. It doesn't affect them personally. In fact, they can make a case for attacking Iran even if Israel did not support it. They have the documents and the arguments right here on this handout they got from AIPAC.
