It is too late to paint a happy face on Olmert's Lebanon War. There is too much devastation in Lebanon. Too many dead Lebanese. But worse than that. There is too much damage in Israel, and too many dead Israelis. Olmert decided to turn an incident into a major war. That war has failed to achieve any stated goal. His latest statements and actions make it clear that he will not achieve his latest stated goal. Israel has not destroyed Hizbollah. It has not kept Hizbollah from firing on Israel. It has not freed the prisoners. What possible way can there be to define this as victory? Olmert can claim victory only if he is willing to claim he wanted Hizbollah to win, and was willing to do anything to help them.
