Religion and state are separate in Syria and Egypt, as they were in Iraq. All three are republics. They may have dictators at their head but they are not theocracies, far from it. Egyptian and Syrian are nationalities with no mention of religion. However, in Israel, there is no such thing as an “Israeli” nationality although all Israelis qualify as “citizens of Israel.” The Israeli government classifies its citizens by religion (Jewish) or ethnicity (Arab) and for those immigrants whose status as Jews is questioned by the Israeli rabbinate, including more than 300,000 arrivals from the former Soviet Union, by their country of origin.
