The Greek welfare state is pretty weak, and not very broad at all. As is Spains. It is not the Welfare state that has brought down the European economy or The US's. In Europe its been mainly mis-management of public funds and widespread Public corruption. (an almost unbeatable evil in Mediterrenean economies-see greece, spain, italy and.....israel). In the US it has obviously been, and there is no question about this, 2 extremel;y expensive wars. Clinton had a HUGE budget surplus and by the time Bush had finished his 4 years the situation was what we all know.....a shambles!! So please dont give us this "Welfare state wont work" because that is not the problem! Costs here in israel have been allowed to spiral completely out of control in everything from housing, to food to everyday stuff, and these things have to be kept under control in one way or another, for example by abolishing these absurd oligopolies and properly opening the market. Also, Israels defence costs, the costs of maintaining the Settlements and the costs of the State for the Haredim sections of the population are just unsustainable.
