If Israel wants to fight delegitimization it must abandon the settlement project immediately. Settlements make a viable Palestinian state impossible. Since transfer and apartheid are morally unacceptable outcomes, the only democratic solution in lieu of a two-state compromise would be to replace Israel with a non-sectarian state of all its citizens. Those who would de-legitimize Israel will always have a case to make as long as it looks like Israel is not really serious about a two state solution. Another problem is that those who support Israel but criticize the occupation are too often treated as if their real motive was to destroy Israel. As long as Israel's defenders fail to distinguish between those who disagree with a Jewish state in principle and those who want to end the occupation and discrimination within Israel, the de-legitimization movement will keep growing. You can't simultaneously try to bolster Israel's image and slander moderate critics like President Carter.
