    Even if all members of the Security Council other than the US voted in favour it still wouldn't help because in the Security Council the US has a veto. Obama & Congress have made it clear to Abbas and the rest of the world that if this issue gets to the Security Council then they will veto it so what exactly does Abbas think he has to gain from sucking up to either the Security Council whose support he needs to be granted statehood or the General Assembly who again can't give him his state without the Security Council. if Abbas was smart he would accept he won't be getting any state through the UN and as a face saving measure say I reserve the right to go the UN route but because I am committed to peace I intend to give negotiations a chance so I call for negotiations now. Obama would not be able to help him to the same degree he would have been able to do 2-3 years ago when Abbas was rejecting talks but if Abbas calls for talks now Obama will be able to put a certain amount of pressure on Bibi if needed. If Abbas wastes his time with the UN and no negotiations don't happen then in 1 year Obama who wants to be his friend might be out and he will possibly have to deal with a pro Israel Republican president who will not only make sure nothing happens in the UN but if negotiations take place he will be on Israel's side. Abbas should not waste the fact that for the first time in over 30 years the US is run by a president who hates Israel as much as he does and he may only have 1 year left to make use of.
