Had Barak told Netanyahu that the alternative is that Labor would leave the government, Netanyahu would have agreed to the trivial step. The problem is that Barak refuses to risk his seat at the government, which means no ultimatum. Barak chickened out also when a peace deal with Syria was to be worked out in Shepherdstown (early 2000) - according to Barak's own plan. Barak feared Israeli public reaction to his conceding the Golan. Obama, and especially Clinton, should have known better. They have only themselves to blame.
