It is first good to recall that according to the 1947 UN Partition Resolution which Israel agreed too, Hebron was to be part of the Arab state, unlike Jerusalem which was to be an international city. The Zionist Jews actually agreed to give up on Hebron (as well as on the Etzion block, for that matter). What is the importance of Hebron for the Jews? Hebron was the capital city of the tribe of Judah. King David was crowned there first as King of Judah and then as King of United Israel, but then captured and moved to Jerusalem, which remained the capital of the Jews since then. So why is Hebron important? Well, according to the Biblical account, Abraham and the other Patriarchs and wives are buried there. This is a value of the "past" type, not the "future". Are Braslav Hasidim distressed that Uman is in the Ukraine? They come to visit for the High-Holidays and then return home to their countries. And what about the Messiah buried in New York City? After the ressurection of the dead he will move to Israel. We are lucky that Muslims revere Abraham. They did, and will, take good care of his resting place. And they will be interested in Jewish tourists that will come to pray and pay their respects. We should move onward to the future.
