More than the Palestinians or the Arabs, it was need of the Israeli left to convince the Israeli public that there was a credible peace partner on the Arab side, while every fact on the ground indicated the contrary. With little, if any, difference between the aims of the "moderate" Fatah and the "extremist" Hama's et al. it was only a matter of time that the Israeli electorate realized that they had been taken for a ride by the Israeli left, and that any further concessions would only serve to facilitate the Arab goals for a Judenrein Judea and Samaria in the short run, with endless possibilities in the longer term. With little to show by way of benefits, it was only natural that the peaceful coexistence farce would fall through. And it did!
