The Israeli government does not like unfirendly publicity and tends to overreact to such stuff. Before the days of the internet, Israel had more control over this sort of thing by cultivating influence in the major media outlets. Now it is a jungle out there and criticism of Israel is common around the world. Even the national governments which are staunchly supportive of Israel such as America and Canada do not support the occuption, the blockade and the settlement enterprise with anywhere near the same fervor. Now we have a poet which Jews would like to put on the hot seat as they try to do with any high profile critic. The problem is that the Israeli cat is out of the bag and, as the article points out quite clearly, Grass's criticism is well known and widely accepted already. It is not so useful to state a criticism of Israel one time just to get it off your chest. It must be repeated ten times daily until the world world is chanting criticism of Israel. It is quite likely to happen in time. This is the path which Israel has chosen.
