Clearly, Shavit is using the characterization of "third world" as a pejorative. Suave, a French economist invented the term in 1952 to describe a genre of countries, former colonies that were at the bottom of the economic ladder. Later on, during the Cold War, countries that did not want to align themselves with neither the US or the USSR, termed themselves, the "third world".With the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, the term Second World largely fell out of use and the meaning of First World has become has extended to include all developed countries while the term Third Word has become a neologism for the least developed countries. Shavit's use of the term serves one purpose-to create another red herring.
