A week and half before he resigned, the US had people in Cairo discussing options and alternatives with the military and government heavyweights 'other than Mubarak'. The decision that the army "insist" he step down was made in close coordination with the US, and it came sometime immediately before Obama backed off from his rhetoric about need for Mubarak to resign. And the reason for that should be readily apparent. Remember the US harsh reaction to Suleiman's comment to the protesters about the alternative being a coup?
