This article gives a misleading account of the background to the Six Day war. It was triggered primarily by the actions of President Nasser of Egypt when he closed the Straits of Tiran to Israeli ships, expelled UN peacekeeping forces from Sinai and explicitly announced that his country would wage war to destroy Israel. This had nothing to do with Syria but was a response to Soviet backing for the anti-Jewish cause and also to a certain perception in the Arab world that Israelis had lost the will to fight in self-defence. Unfortunately it was necessary to fight to prove that this perception was wrong.
