The findings make perfect sense. The problem is apples and oranges. Most Birthright participants are from Reform and Conservative communities. As one friend of mine said upon her return from a Birthright trip, "They brought us to an Orthodox synagogue for Shabbat--I hated it, it wasn't my tradition." Why would anyone expect American Jewish youth to be inspired by an approach to Judaism that most would reject even if they *were* already affiliated with a congregation in their own communities?
