Perhaps the real reason why so many non-extremist Israelis are so unwilling to relinquish territory to the Palestinians can be found in Mr. Yavin's closing words in the NYTimes May 30 interview: "Is Israel really and sincerely doing its best to compromise?" And then he said: "I'm not sure any power on earth can move a people to give any land to your enemy, one that really wants to harm you." We Israelis have yet to be convinced that the Palestinians do not want to harm us - if we relinquish territories. So far, events - starting with the handing-over of cities to the PA after the Islo Agreements - have not justified any optimism.
