Intermarried couples who participate in a few bourgeious Jewish religious rituals are no different than Americans of different Christian faiths which have married in earlier periods. The distinction is, however, that while other faiths define themselves as communities of believers, the Jewish faith also defines the Jews as a people, i.e. an ethnicity and a race. The de facto evolution of non-orthodox religious institutions in the United States is to being religious institutions in which the notion of a Jewish people existing will be more now a matter of rhetoric rather than a real reality. It is the furfillment of the goals of the original Reform Judaism of Germany: the end of the Jews as a people in the United States, and the normalization of them as a religious group, with rituals, practices and a relationship to the ambient culture not very different from most non-fundamentalist Christian churches.
