I remember interviewing the young Grass when he first visited NYC in the 60s while I was covering the book beat for the NY Times. He was funny, charming and politically incisive. Then a few years ago I was teaching at the Freie Universitaet in Berlin when he came to attend a seminar. I approached him and recalled our meeting. In response he snapped "No, I don't remember--and so what'.......I felt god after I responded with a neat German insult I had learned from Lauritz Melchior, the opera singer who reserved such language for some music critics and artists' managers......
