No one is suggesting Safed Chief Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu change his eating or driving habits, just that he live and let live. It is not Torah, Mishna or Talmud that leads to ultraorthodox craziness, it is the mind trick that says, "I believe, therefor it must be so, and I can apply it to everyone else's reality". A decent secular education helps guard against this form of self delusion since it broadens the mind. Secular eduction is full of its own holes and fallacies, but at least would keep "John" from concluding that he has "perspective" when he clearly does not.
