But the Jews, having no political power and being dependent upon the utilitarian needs of the princes, continued to be the party attacked. But the writer is correct that it matters little. The story of little Simon of Trent has become part of popular, folk mythology and whether it is based on the deeds of some fanatic group of Jews is, to the popular medieval mind, irrelevant. The barbaric act of a revengeful cult is attributed to the whole group-the "Jews" do such and such and so on. A little understanding of European medival religious and cultural history will show that no group, Jew, Christian or Muslim was without those in its midst, possibly parading as scrupulously religious, as prime examples of those whom Jewish tradition refers to as those who have no fear of Heaven and yet justify their perversions in its Name.
