Obama is too embarrassed to use the veto, and the Palestinians have no real motive to embarrass Obama. On the other hand, it is clear that Obama will veto the SC resolution if pushed to a corner, and it is also clear that the resolution of Statehood will pass the General Assembly. Let Abbas work out a deal with Obama that will save the latter from being embarrassed. First, the bottom line should be that the Palestinians will definitely ask the General Assembly to approve of their state. Now, if Obama wants them not to appeal to the Security Council too, let him pay for the privilege. One possibility: The US should not cut aid to the Palestinians. Another possibility: Obama should not undermine the Quartet efforts to mediate, but recognize that the Europeans are better mediators than the US is because they have a more even-handed attitude towards both sides. The US should then follow the Quartet instead of the other way around. At the end of this, Palestine will be able to join the ICC, then get any Israeli politico who succeeds in annexing Palestinian areas (such as Lieberman has threatened) indicted for a war crime. This will change the Israeli mindset drastically.
