Yes, leaders should be willing to die for their people and values, but what type of martyrdom will solve the current problem? Will a martyr's death bring Israel, Gaza, Syria, and Iran into lasting harmony? Is Iran going nuclear only because no Israeli martyr has stepped forward? The martyrdom will bring no lasting value unless others consolidate the program sought by the martyr. Martin Luther King Jr. was killed for trying to end unjust war as much as for trying to end racism. Yet the U.S. has continued, despite King's legacy, to conduct the type of wars King denounced.
