Every democracy, from time to time, has to revise old phrases which no longer carry the same meanings as they once did. However, a society under constant threat from its neighbors unfortunately does not have the same luxury as other democracies to adjust its goals - or language - in a natural fashion. As long as the very existence of Israel continues to be questioned, a certain amount of Israeli patriotism is inevitable, no matter what we would prefer to call it today.
