For most of my adult life I supported the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine. But Israel's rejection of the two state solution embodied in the Oslo agreements and the Arab Peace Plan has made the single state of Israel/Palestine inevitable. And obviously, a state containing 1.5 million Arabs behind the Green Line, 2.5 million Arabs in the West Bank, 1.5 million Arfabs in Gaza and 4 million refugees oversees can never be a "Jewish state." I can't really blame the settlers for fighting for fighting for what they believe in.The blame for the failure of the Jewish state rests squarely on the shoulders of the silent majority of Israeli and American Jews who said they opposed the Jewish settlement of the West Bank but who lacked the backbone to confront the settler zealots. Now it is too late. The Levy report doesn't delegitimize Israel. Israel's crimes against the Palestinians has delegitimized Israel and the settlement of the West Bank has made redemption impossible for the current generation. Progressive Jews and their friends now need to begin the difficult task of preparing for the transition from a Jewish state to a binational state where Arabs and Jews can live together peacefully.
