For Russia, it's all about money and influence. They lost considerable standing when their clients lost in open confrontations with Israel back in Soviet days. Now they're intent in regaining their place in the region. But in selling advanced weaponry, they're not only encouraging the next open conflict as Syria and Hizbullah get more cocky. They're guaranteeing that the destruction will be greater and the loss of life far higher. And the US? They're playing the same game, though on a smaller scale as it seeks to provide more arms to Lebanon (which will only end up under effective Hizbullah control).
