Once again a factional politician in Lebanon is claiming that the U.S. and Israel can accomplish what he cannot: Defeat his enemies so that he can be the supreme leader of a Lebanon united under his leadership. Once again he will make promises to Israel and the US that they wish to hear, and once again, the US and Israel will be involved in a destructive war which will, in the long term, accomplish nothing. The example of Iraq is not adequate to convince ambitious politicians of the folly of overthrowing the regime in Syria. Even though Jumblatt is correct, that the Syrian regime is a destructive influence on the peaceful and contructive development of Lebanon, overthrowing the regime there will only create more chaos, both in Lebanon and certainly in Syria.
